Saint John is a loyalist city built upon the heritage of its ancestors with a history in the shipbuilding industry. The skyline of the city boasts some of the tallest office towers in Atlantic Canada amidst historic properties hundreds of years old. Much of the city was destroyed during the Great Fire in 1877. Churches like the Trinity Royal Church on Germain St. were rebuilt on the same spots. The central business district of the city is connected through indoor walkways from Market Square, through Brunswick Square to the City Market.
Plan your own site seeing walking tour by starting at the top of King Street by the historic Band Stand, proceed down the hill and turn left onto Germain Street where you will pass the Trinity Church (fish weather vane) on the left and the Union Club (with its rounded glass windows) on the right.
On the corner of Princess Street turn right and go down the hill, make a left turn onto Princess William Street and continue to walk to the end, where you will see the Three Sisters Lamp (Saint John oldest form of light house) At the end of the street take a right onto Water Street.
As you walk up Water Street you will pass the newly built Cruise Ship Terminal (which welcomed its 1 millionth passenger in the summer of 2008) Keep walking straight toward Market Square, on right is the historic Barbours General Store. On the left is the Loyalist Plaza where the life size Bronze Moose stands (donated by Moosehead Breweries).
Situated at the Main Entrance to Market Square is John Hoopers (one of Saint John’s most renowned Artisans) Statue the Time Piece. This is an actual working clock so take a moment to see if you can figure it out and have your photo taken. Continue along the boardwalk until you reach the Harbour Passage (the red pathway), look up to the right and see Saint John’s Hollywood style sign that welcomes everyone to the city. At the end of the trail, if you still have the energy you can continue on towards Reversing Falls, which boasts the highest tides in the world.
