Groundhog Day originates in ancient European Candlemas celebrations, which signify the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. German settlers brought this tradition to North America, where the groundhog replaced the badger.
The most famous groundhog is Punxsutawney Phil, who predicts the weather each February 2nd in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to folklore, if Phil sees his shadow, winter will last another six weeks; if he doesn't see it, spring arrives sooner. Other notable groundhogs include Buckeye Chuck from Ohio and Shubenacadie Sam from Nova Scotia.
