Throughout its long and colourful history, commerce has played an important role in the daily life of Saint John, Canada’s first incorporated city. As with all busy seaports, the importing and exporting of goods creates a vibrantmarket culture,” and New Brunswick’s largest city is no exception. The original City Market was located on the ground floor of a wooden building in Market Square, an area in the heart of downtown bounded by the waterfront and rows of warehouses. The current City Market, located a few blocks from the original location, opened for business in 1876. Each morning and evening, the deputy market clerk rings the market bell, a tradition that signals the opening and closing of the day’s business. Built to reflect Saint John’s marine heritage, the City Market’s ceiling resembles an upside down ship’s keel.
