The icy waters of the North Atlantic hold many secrets. Each wave that crashes onto the rocky coast carries a story — a feeling — that reflects the mystery of the ages.

Among the most intriguing of these stories is what happened on the night of April 14, 1912 when Titanic, the largest luxury liner of its day, collided with an iceberg about 600 kilometres south of Newfoundland. A few hours later, amid the anguished cries of passengers and crew, the massive ship sank bow-first, carrying more than a thousand people to eternity.

The Sinking of the Titanic Ornament commemorates the 100th anniversary of the tragic events that took place in the early morning darkness of April 15, 1912. It also honours the memory of those who perished and the Halifax grave sites where more than 150 of the victims are buried.
